Back to les grandes tetons...

Kurt and Alex hiked the Grand. As usual, I'll let him blog about it, but I'm gonna get the pics up.

Kurt says, "We started at 2 am. Traveled fast and light. Once we got to the summit ridge, the winds were gusting to 75 mph. Ummm, so we decided to turn around. And Alex was freezing. It was fun? And I will do it again."

Alisse T visits Provo

On August something-er-other, my old freshman year roommate, Alisse T Sherwood Baldwin, came to visit Provo and lucky me, came and saw me! I haven't seen Alisse in 2 years and before than it had been about a year and a year before that we lived together, so yeah, it was good to see her! Alisse and I basically lost our minds and gained lots of weight together freshman year and had a blast the whole time. Then she transferred from BYU to go back home, got married, and has moved on from me ... sniff. But seriously, Alisse is awesome and it was good to see her and this time we were both married! She and her hubby Scott crashed it on our air mattress for a night and it was a blast. It also turned into a mini freshman year reunion, with Chris, Dan Chappell, and Jigga joining in on the fun.
First, we hung out at our place, tried to figure out what to do, and took silly pictures.

Chris, Dan, and Kurt's leg. Nice. By the way, Chris is seriously one of my favorite people ever. I want him to marry one of my relatives so we can be related forever, but I'm quickly running out of single female relatives. Drat.

I look pretty ... with my hair up ... and my eyes closed ...

Group picture! Don't you like my pose? It's basically amazing. From the left: Chris, Dan, Scott and Alisse T, and Jigga. I hope you know which one's me and which is Kurt. If you don't... I'll kill myself.
Next, we decided it was definitely appropriate to take Al (as I call her) and Scott to Ella Good, and since it was such a beautiful day, we walked there!

We're walking, we're walking...

My favorite Hawaiian lady. And yes, I changed shirts.
Then, we headed over to Brick Oven, a BYU tradition and Scott's favorite. Apparently he and Al hit it up every time they come to Utah and sometimes multiple times. Those also happen to be the only times I go there. :D

Waiting... Actually, despite the fact that is was Friday AND Graduation, our wait for 6 was only 20 minutes. Not bad at all.
It ended up being kinda like a triple date:

Kurt and me

Al and Scott

Jigga and Chris? Haha.

A very fun group. The table behind us in the picture kept looking at us and whispering to each other. Either we were even louder than we thought or they actually thought Chris and Jigga were on a date with each other, even though they definitely did not give off those vibes. Those suspicious Utahns...

Our very miniature 152nd ward reunion!
Now, a walk down memory lane...

January - April 2004: Alisse and me being very ugly freshman year. That was the norm for us.

May 18, 2005: Alisse and Scott's wedding day.

February 2006: Al and Scott visit Provo and we eat at Brick Oven!

August 2008: Al and Scott visit Provo and we once again eat at Brick Oven!
Thanks for including us in your trip, Al! I love you, my lady lesbian lover!

Nebo with Nick

Kurt hiked Mt. Nebo with his buddy Nick. I'll let him blog about it, but I wanted to get the pics up here.

Kurt says, "It was a great hike. It was longer than it was supposed to be. Ummm, how long was it? It was 20 miles round trip, ended up hitting all three summits on Nebo. And umm, it got kinda sketchy going from the south summit to the middle and north summits. When we got to the north (true) summit, we sat there for a while and eventually a hiker came up from the opposite direction we just came. It was this older guy and he asked, 'How did you guys get up here?' and we told him we'd come from the south summit and he said, 'Whoa, I did that when I was younger and I almost died. It's pretty hairy. Yeah, there's a trail from the north and it's a lot shorter and you can gain a lot less elevation.'"
When he got back, he met Allison and me at a sushi place on Center St. in Provo, where he was surprised to find that it was Allison and me on the date together, not him and me.

Movin' on up to the East Side

Well, I have tons of posts to get caught up on... and I'd like to get them all done today! It's amazing how backlogged you get without a stable internet connection! Today is Kurt's first day of work (should I have taken pictures? I was still under the influence of my sleeping pill.) and thanks to Google text, I found the library, which has free wifi! I decided to start my catch up for y'all with our move, then go back and start chronologically--this somehow makes sense in my mind. Sorry for not having any real posts the last month or so!
So, Kurt and I went to California for 9 days. We got back into Utah last Tuesday night (9/9), spent Wednesday saying goodbye to friends (those we could get on such a short notice), saying goodbye to Kurt's mom and my wonderful grandparents, picking up our rental truck, and packing it. It really didn't take that long to pack the rental truck, only about 45 minutes, but we weren't really able to start until 11:30 so finally at 12:30 we got to bed. We woke up the next morning at 7, literally jumped in the car or truck, and left for Denver. Kurt drove the truck and I followed. Here are the sights from the trip:

The I-15 through Provo

Price, Utah

Woohoo!

Grand Junction, CO

Vail, CO
Wait.. where's the truck? Well, if you noticed in the Grand Junction picture, we were about to head into a massive storm. It slowed us down quite a bit and so we weren't sure we'd be able to get to Littleton before 5 pm, when our real estate office closed. So Kurt told me to go on ahead, while he went up hills at a speed of about 20 mph. (Oh, did I mention that the cabin to the rental truck leaked? He got soaked during the rain storm.) I continued on at a speed of about 5 to 8 mph above the speed limit. No big deal. I was making good time, when suddenly... I got pulled. For going 8 over. Never mind that the people in front of me were going exactly the same speed, but I think the cop saw an out of state license plate and decided to teach me a lesson. Well, he didn't give me a ticket, thank goodness, but now I was going to barely make it.
I get to Denver, jump on the C-470 (the belt loop). I had texted Google to get directions to our real estate office. They seemed a little odd to me (from my limited knowledge of the area) but I followed them anyway. I got lost. Not just lost, but hopelessly lost in the ghetto, not in Littleton. I had no idea where I was, it was 4:50 and no one at the real estate office was picking up. So what do I do? Being the pms-ing woman that I was at the time, I panicked. I mean, really panicked. I'm a panicker and I recognize that, so I try to control it, especially since it bugs Kurt (he never panics). But when I was only a week away from my monthly visitor, I couldn't control it. I called Kurt, sobbing, and told him that I was lost. I also left a few panicky messages at the real estate office. Kurt ended up getting to the office at 5:10 (he was able to get through and ask someone to wait for him) and I told him to apologize for my hysterical messages. I am chagrined to admit that all happened, but it's part of the story and I never leave anything out if it makes the story better. Ahem. We get to our complex, with our keys, and commenced moving in (after spending about 15 minutes to get the truck into a parking spot). And that's when our wonderful neighbors helped us. I'm still amazed at their readiness to help. We're still in the process of moving in--still looking for a dresser, couch, table and chair, coffee table, and night stand (we've ordered a bed; it's on the way)--so we're still surrounded by boxes and have only camping chairs to sit on. BUT! We are grateful to be here, and are very excited! Yesterday was Kurt's last day of freedom, so we took the light rail downtown and ate at the Cheesecake Factory on the 16th Street Mall. Then, we walked down the Mall and I was able to register to vote. Funny story about that:
Kurt and I are walking down the sidewalk, enjoying the gorgeous 70-something, sunny weather. A guy about our age asks if we're registered to vote. "Why, no!" I exclaim and begin to fill out the paper he hands me. We start talking to him and he tells us why he's doing this (wants to help Obama get elected, yadda yadda) and he tells us where he's from then says, "Of course, I'll probably leave the country for a little while if McCain gets elected." I laugh, and jokingly say, "You know, I feel the exact same way about if Obama gets elected." His friendly demeanor immediately drops and he says, "You don't think McCain will screw this country up even worse? Why don't you like Obama?" "Well, for one, he's a Socialist," I say lightly, as I continue filling out my registration form. Then, he darkly mutters, "This country would be a lot better off if everyone were Socialist," probably hoping I'll argue back. I laugh again, and say, "I disagree with you, but that's ok. Because that's what makes this country so great. I have my opinions and you have yours, and I don't agree with yours, but I respect your right to them." At this point, he stopped all conversation. Having learned we were Republicans, he didn't want to be nice to us and seeing that I didn't want to argue, he couldn't argue with us, and so he could think of nothing better than to be quiet. I think it's sad that he couldn't be nice to someone of differing political views. I guess it's election year after all.

Happy Happy Birfday

Happy Birthday, Caroline!!!
Caroline is my beautiful younger sister and today she is 19.
Lemme just say that Caroline is my best friend. And she is the prettiest of the 3 Cooper girls. Just see for yourself:

For Caroline's birthday, 19 things about her:
1. She's played soccer nearly her whole life. When she was little, the coaches of her league called her the Terminator because she was kinda scary (haha, just kidding). She's been playing goalie for a long time now (at least 4 years, if not more), but her coach let her play in the field for a few of her senior games and she scored in every one!
2. She's overcome a plethora of obstacles in her life and yet she's still the nicest, least bitter person I know. Definitely better than me.
3. When she was little she liked to harp on the fact that she was different from the rest of the family because she was the only blond one and the only left-handed one. She couldn't sit in her favorite seat at the table because then her left hand would hit the right hand of the person next to her and she's always considered that to be left-hand discrimination. ;)
4. Caroline loves pearls. They are her jewelry of choice.
5. Someone once said that she's the most feminine of the three of us Cooper girls. I definitely agree. Personality and in the traditional sense of the word.
6. Caroline is the most likely of all of us kids to end up living in South Carolina when she's all growed up. None of us can say why, exactly, but we all agree.
7. Caroline has wanted to be a PE Teacher/high school soccer coach and a speech therapist for a career, among other things. I'm not really sure what she most wants to do now, though. She probably doesn't either, since she's a freshman in college (lol).
8. When Stephanie and I were on dance team, Caroline tried to dance with us when we'd practice on our back porch. Have you ever watched a 10 year old dance before? It's pretty funny.
9. Caroline is probably the most Southern in our family. She wears Sperry's, listens to country music, wears pearls, enjoys hunting and fishing, and owns more than one camo article of clothing.
10. She is a ton of fun. Caroline is really good at poking fun at herself and she's pretty much always up for a good time. She's super goofy and, like the other 2 Cooper girls, doesn't mind making a fool of herself in public in the name of fun.
11. She has the picture-perfect body AND she has a blond hair and blue eyes. Need I say more?
12. She's probably the most forgiving person I know. Caroline does not hold grudges, period. And she loves everyone unconditionally. Not judgmental at all.
13. When Caroline was little her favorite movie was Raiders of the Lost Ark. She had one of those plastic horses that's attached by springs to a metal frame and she named it Raider. She loved Raider and would even brush his "teeth." By the time we got rid of that horse, it had so much dried Crest in its mouth, it looked rabid.
14. Chou chou clearly prefers Stephanie and me to Caroline. We don't know why, but it really bugs Caroline.
15. Caroline has a beautiful singing voice. And she's always loved to sing. Once, we she was little, we were at our cousins' house--the Parkinson's. She and Becca were singing along to something-er-other and Caroline told Becca, "Becca, you can't sing like I can, because I have French blood."
16. She's probably gonna get mad at me for posting all of these embarrassing stories.
17. The boys LOVE Caroline. They flock to her like bees to flowers, no joke. Probably because she's super fun, incredibly nice, amazing beautiful, athletic, and not afraid to get dirty. She's basically the perfect woman.
18. Caroline is an optimist. She is never negative. She always looks on the bright side. It's infectious.
19. Caroline, being a true Cooper, sometimes gets really hyper. And, when she gets really hyper, she just has to hug something! It's usually me.
It's your birthday! Yay! I love you, Prissy!!

In Living Color(ado)

Well, everyone, Kurt and I made it safely to Colorado on Thursday. The move-in went quickly with the help of our wonderful neighbors. There were about 8 people helping us; it was amazing. It was really touching. Right now we're making our apartment a home and trying to learn our way around the city. We love our apartment. The only real downfall is the stale smoke smell, but the Febreze plug-ins are helping with that. We don't have internet connection currently--we're bumming it off of whatever restaurant we can--but as soon as we do, I'll do posts. Just wanted to let y'all know we're here!

Palin Fever

At first I was disappointed. I really, really, really wanted Romney in there. I believe he would be an amazing president (and vp would just be a stepping stone to that). However, as I watched McCain's introductory speech, and Palin's speech, I realized she is a phenomenal choice. To quote my friend Amanda:
"i love Sarah Palin. i mean...who couldn't love a woman who says such wonderful things about children? and is a Feminist for life? and is for protecting marriage?...but is sensitive to those who practice homosexuality and the need to protect them against discrimination? i don't know about you..but i love mccain's choice."

I completely agree. I look forward to learning more about this dynamic woman. And, while looking for a picture of her for this post, I saw that she is apparently one of the hottest women politicians. So what's not to like?

Seriously though, I'm feeling better about McCain. And I'm going to volunteer to help his campaign when we move to Denver. Kristina involved in politics? Shocking, I know.

Cute Family.
Cool woman!

Seein' stripes

I've recently fallen in love with zebra print. I think it is the coolest pattern. (I thought about changing my layout to a zebra print but this one is like my wedding colors, and it's toile, which I also adore.)
Here are some zebra print items I really love:

Dooney and Burke purse (also comes with red leather accents which I like better but they didn't have a picture of)

Zebra wall print from Ikea

Pleated skirt from Express

Haha, just kidding :D

I Spy a Birthday Boy...

Today is the birthday of my very favorite-ist person in the whole world...

Kurt. :) He's now 27! Wowzas!
We're coming up on knowing each other for 2 years now (I know, not very long) and sometimes I still can't believe how much fun we have together. The other day I was trying to figure out if we're kindred spirits or complimentary ... and I decided we're complimentary. Anyhow, rather than making another long Kurt-dedicated post that I know y'all love to read so much (haha), I'm putting up a playlist of music from bands that always make me think of him. Because one of my favorite things about him is how much he loves music... which is almost as much as I do.

Happy Birthday Kurtstan(son)! I love zhuu!

What we've been up to

So I went from 24 posts in July to 2 in August so far ... Kurt and I really haven't been up to anything particularly blog worthy. That isn't to say we haven't been busy. Kurt took the second part of the CPA yesterday so he was studying non-stop until yesterday morning. And, alas, no rest for the weary because he started studying for the third section today. But tomorrow he gets to hike Nebo and next week he's going to do Grand Teton, so I think he doesn't mind hitting the books right away.
I've been winding up my time at WestPro, tying up loose ends and hiring a new receptionist. We found an apartment in Denver, I'm applying for jobs, and we have a move-in date: September 11th. We'll be staying with the Wilcox's until Kurt's birthday (24th), when we'll head up to Kurt's mom's for a few days, then over to my grandma's for a few more. Then, we're taking an adventure trip somewhere with the Winfield's for Labor Day weekend. After that, we're heading off on our own to California (hopefully!) to see friends, redwoods, ocean-side cliffs, and Yosemite. Then we'll head back to Grandma Hatch's for 2 short days, load up the rental truck, and move to Denver!
So I will have some stuff to blog about before the end of the month: my wonderful friend/lover Alisse T is coming in town tonight and I haven't seen her in 2 and 1/2 years so I'm excited to hang out with her; Kurt's Nebo hike; Kurt's Grand Teton Hike; Kurt's birthday party I'm planning (he'll be 27! Crazy!); and I want to plan a sunrise hike for Timp with our friends; ALL by the end of the month!
And right now I'm listening to "I Would Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)" by Meatloaf. That is definitely blog worthy.

Denver and back in one day

Last week, Kurt and I found a sweet apartment in downtown Littleton. When we inquired about the property, we found out that it was everything we wanted (just about) but that we had to sign for it in person. So we decided, "Let's go!"

On Friday we drove to Denver and back home. We were awake for 20 hours and 17 of those were spent driving to, from, and around Denver. I'm glad to say that the apartment is exactly what we expected and that we signed on it! Yay! Despite the incredible longness of the day (yes longness, not length :D ) we actually had a really good time. Here are the highlights in no particular order:

-Seeing a semi hit and knock over a traffic cone on the highway;
-Seeing a stunt plane perform tricks in Rifle, CO, on the way there. It was pretty cool!;
-On the way back, in Rifle, we saw stunt plane school. Not as exciting, but still makes the highlights list;
-The guy we saw in downtown Littleton (called LiDo by some): wearing a neck brace, smoking a cigarette, standing outside of the shady Shootin' Shop South. Niiiiice;
-Walking around downtown Littleton while eating McDonald's ice cream cones. It's a pretty cute area;
-The adorable maltese-terrier mix in the art shop in LiDo that we stepped into;
-Lots of cute, homey, artsy, antique-y shops in LiDo;
-Holding our breath for every tunnel we drove through. There's this one tunnel, the Eisenhower tunnel, that's about 2 miles long. Neither of us could hold it the entire way, but I held it twice, while it took Kurt 3 times;
-Kurt's biggest highlight was probably seeing signs for the many 14,000 foot mountains in CO;
-Writing silly love notes to each other to pass the time;
-Eating lots of sour patch kids. It occurred to me that they're kind of a morbid snack. I mean, children?? My goodness;
-My job applying experience at Hoflin Publishing. My initial thoughts on entering the building: "Well, I expected these people to be weird (the company publishes dog books and magazines only), but this is worse. It smells like a weird combination of rubbing alcohol and permanent markers. I thought only Dwight painted his walls black. There's like five light bulbs and windows in this place, combined. Why did I bother bringing in a resume if I have to fill out an application? Did that lady not get the memo that floral pants a) are no longer in style and b) should at least reach the tops of your feet?";
-The three AMAZING lightning storms we skirted. We honestly watched hours' worth of photography-worthy lightning strikes and yet were never in the storms;
-While watching the first lightning storm, as we drove through a canyon, we saw a literal waterfall of mud (a mudfall?) cascading down the wall of the canyon. It was sweet.

Random Thoughts About My Day

-I've finally gotten less annoyed by many of the people at work, just in time for it to be over.

-Speaking of, after today I have 18 days left of work. Yes.

-Kurt and I found an apartment today in Littleton! It's across from the Light Rail station and it's almost 700 sq. feet and it's only $545 a month. The only pit fall: it doesn't allow pets. Sigh. I'm now even further from my doggy companion. The other pit fall: we have to sign for it in person. In Colorado. Soon. So we're driving down on Friday morning, signing for the apartment at 3 pm, and then probably heading back right away (but maybe staying for the night). It's crazy, but also really exciting.

-I'm pretty sure I have my short-term career plan mapped out. I'm going to get my Masters in Creative Writing, however I need time to bulk up my portfolio and just fine-tune my talent since I've basically ignored it the past 5 years (sad, huh). So, in the meantime, before I'm a mom, I'm going to work as a receptionist or something similar and preferably at a publishing house or magazine or something like that. I would still like to be an editor. Also, my mom and I are going to write kids' books and I still want to write young adult literature. I feel good about this plan.

-Kurt and I went swimming with our friends the Winfield's yesterday for the first time this summer. It felt so good to be in a pool again.

-I'm sleepy and have a lot to do before we leave on Thursday night, like moving stuff around for Allison to get back on Saturday (we're subletting from the Wilcox's).

-I have to teach Relief Society on Sunday. It could be good ... it'll definitely be a learning experience.

-I really want a Coke. But no, I will be good.

-I have recently fallen in love with apricot/cream colored standard poodles. I want one. I'd also like a ragdoll cat.

-I'm torn between adopting a dog and buying one from a breeder and getting the breed I want. Tough decision. (Fortunately and unfortunately I now have a year to make it ... )

-I've laughed harder the past week of work than the whole 10 months I've worked here. Unfortunately, it's all been at my boss's expense. Fortunately, though, he hasn't known about and he hasn't been here.

-I think my resume looks pretty good now. I've been working on it.

-I probably haven't worked hard enough today.
